My Design Process

Hey guys, welcome to my Digital Artefact (DA) blog page!

My name is Kayla Mathew and I thrive of visual aesthetics and projects. I create, design, and am passionate to see how far my creativity can take me. My DA, however, has pushed me to do the things I want to do and make time for it.

So, from my pitch you will know that I am crafting my DA around the aim of providing audiences with insight into the creative process behind content creation, focusing on digitally-visual productions. Behind any content creation is a design process that helps guide and build the framework for your project. Everyones may vary but here are some quick tips on how to conduct your design process.

  1. Be prepared to fail early, fail often. (FEFO)

Every project or idea comes with its challenges and NOTHING starts off perfect! You must go into the design process with an open mind and an attitude that is accepting of getting knocked back and critiqued. This process will help you smooth out the rough edges of your ideas and form a more durable and successful long-term creation.

2. Research

Research is your BESTFRIEND! Research is the key to attracting the right audiences and building something fit for a relevant purpose. Consumers can be broken off into segments of people that have similar interests, wants and needs (target markets). When conducting content for an audience, research helps you find out the characteristics of particular audiences. This allows you to understand what will interest and engage your chosen target market. From this, you can form your ideas based on the characteristics of your target audience. Characteristics could include: where your audience is located (a social media platform? A specific area?), what activities they enjoy (sports, painting?), what personality traits do there express (environmental concern, fun & bubbly?), etc… Researching content that already exists can give you an idea of your competitive positioning as well as what is missing in the world. Perhaps your idea is one of a kind and presents an alternate solution for consumers. Use research to put yourself in a better position.

3. Ideate (FIST, KISS)

Here is when you brainstorm and develop your ideas. Mind maps are great for conducting this step as all your ideas are catalogued in the one location and branch off each other. In this step, a quantity of ideas trumps the quality of ideas. So just keep on thinking and writing all your thoughts. Keep in mind FIST = fast, inexpensive, simple, tiny and KISS = Keep it simple stupid. The best ideas start small and then grow over time so don’t aim too high or big and plan to do something you can’t commit to. Be simple. Once you have all your ideas, then you can start breaking them down till you have a solid idea in place.

4. Prototype

Prototyping is like the practice run of a final design. It is when you pitch your idea to a small group and start conducting an early sample, model, or release of a product or project built to test a concept. Here is when you gain feedback and critic and change your ideas accordingly. You mustn’t get too attached to an idea as you might have to adjust it or start from scratch.

5. Select

Now that you have researched, ideated and prototyped you can select your final idea or concept based on all you have endured and experienced.

6. Implement

Implementing involves the publishing or releasing of your selected idea to the public, either through social media, stores, via a website or whatever vehicle you choose. This is when your idea or project comes to life and engages with an audience!

7. Learn & Evaluate

After you have published your idea, concept, or project you will see the way it operates with an active audience. You will learn what works, what doesn’t and how to engage with your audiences effectively. You will fail and adhere to such failures to better and improve your creation. You might also learn what elements of your production is missing and needed for success. This is the time to evaluate your process and reflect on what can be done.

GOODLUCK!!
