Hey all, thank you for visiting my blog ‘Capture by Kayla’. Here you will be given insight into my inner workings, ideas and thoughts. But first I think introductions are in order.

I am Kayla Mathew a University of Wollongong student completing a Bachelor of Communication and Media (Dean Scholar), majoring in Visual Communication Design. I completed my high school certificate at Inaburra School in Bangor and grew up living in the Shire, more accurately Cronulla. My High School experience was an infinite rollercoaster with constant hurdles and victories, however from the start I knew where my passions and skills lied. Ever since I was a little girl I had a creative curiosity, much like my mother. I found myself spending way too much time designing my title page, choosing a book cover or drawing a BTN report. This never really changed.
Achievements
Despite maintaining good results in STEM subjects I was always drawn to the humanities. I liked exploring humanities vast possibilities, without restrictions. Naturally I completed three major subjects in Year 11 (Textiles, Visual Art and Industrial Technology- Multimedia) and two in Year 12 (Art and Multimedia). Everyone said I was mad for choosing two majors and no sciences, but then this happened. I ranked first in my cohort for both subjects, receiving band sixes and nominations for both the InTech and Shape exhibitions for outstanding achievers (Multimedia) and was selected for ArtExpress at HazelHurst Art Gallery (Art). Despite choosing what stereotypically doesn’t lead to a great career I still felt like I had succeed. Having a CEO father’s DNA in my veins I also enjoyed Business Studies and received a band 6 and The University Of Sydney Business School Award in Year 11. These achievements have directed me to my chosen degree in which I am very intrigued and eager about pursuing.

Family:
I grew up with a very strong willed sister who’s really quite different from me. We bare similarities in our passion for visual ascetics however she is more skewed in a black or white, direct philosophy, aka she’s never wrong. I have a cute yet deceiving dog called Coco, who’s a Pomeranian cross papillon. He is an overprotective, peeing ferret at times but he is cute so he gets away with it. He also follows me around when I am lonely, so he has his uses.

My father grew up on a farm in Wagga Wagga, grooming sheep, catching snakes and playing Tennis. We visit family there annually. To see the completely contrasting life they live, which completely opposes my beach/city lifestyle, is amazing. It puts things into perspective and I am very thankful for it. He was brave enough to move away from his beloved home to pursue a career in Business Management. My mother grew up in Melbourne participating in volleyball and calisthenics at high levels. She also completed a Bachelor of Economics. She runs an events decorating business as a sole trader, after a career in interior design.

Travel:
I am extremely fortunate enough to have travelled far and wide around the world. Covering 23 countries at the age of 18. These include
| America | Singapore | Malaysia | Thailand |
| Bali | Cambodia | Vietnam | United Emirates |
| France | Italy | Greece | Spain |
| Malta | Monaco | Switzerland | New Zealand |
| Turkey | Fiji | Norway | Estonia |
| Finland | Qatar | England |

As cheesy it sounds these experiences have truly shaped me into the person I am today. I have seen and experienced so much diversity in culture, food, natural and built landscapes, language and lifestyles that I realised how easy it is to get caught up in one societal bubble or convention, whilst being utterly ignorant to it. It’s amazing to see just how broad our world really is in comparison to what it seems. There’s so much going on and we only hear or witness such a small proportion of it and even less if your not looking. Travel has ignited my passion for photography and capturing a broad array of subjects and scenes as well as an interest in social media and marketing. I like to create, to build and to open peoples eyes to new ideas through visual design and I hope one day to have a career out of it.
